The Department of Bioengineering, which was established as a Division within our university’s Institute of Natural Sciences and admitted its first master’s students in the Fall 2003–2004 semester, launched its doctoral program in 2007 and has been offering undergraduate education within the Faculty of Chemistry and Metallurgy since the 2007–2008 academic year. It is one of the first Bioengineering departments established at state universities.
Our department provides students with a computer lab, a seminar room, and classrooms. There are more than 10 research laboratories in our department. Research activities conducted in our department include biopolymers, artificial vaccines, enzyme stabilization and regulation, enzyme reactions, DNA and drug delivery systems, drug design, biomaterial development and characterization, gene cloning and protein engineering, biosensors/biochips, the development of diagnostic methods in medicine, cell culture and tissue engineering, stem cell research, chemotherapy, and cryopreservation.
In our laboratories, which are equipped with modern instruments, research is conducted to address the demands and needs of both the public and private sectors, within the framework of projects supported by TÜBITAK, TUSEB, DPT, TAGEM, HORIZON, the YTÜ Research Fund, and international fundings. The Department of Bioengineering currently educates nearly 1,000 undergraduate students and more than 200 master’s and doctoral students. The department is staffed by 23 faculty members, 14 research assistants, 2 administrative staff members, and 1 support staff member.
